280 pages of historic postcards from Laurel—ranging from the early 1900s to the late 1980s—faithfully reproduced at full size.

It's impossible to know just how many different postcards from Laurel, Maryland were produced over the course of the 20th century, but one thing is clear—the number is larger than you'd expect. In fact, it's considerably larger than that of more populous nearby towns, such as Silver Spring.

The prolific work of early local photographer, Bert Sadler undoubtedly set the stage for many of the advertising postcards to come; the range of which includes landmarks, schools, churches, restaurants, motels, and more.

Postmark Laurel is the first published collection of these cards, featuring over 130 different pieces, fronts and backs, including many rarities.

Richard Friend is a founding member of The Laurel History Boys, a public history project utilizing archival preservation, photography, oral history, and presentations to convey the historical experiences of Laurel, Maryland—where he grew up. A graphic designer by day, Richard’s passion for hyper-local history began when he created the blog, “Lost Laurel,” as a way to document the vanishing retailers of his home town. This is his second book.

While this book took the help of many to produce, some were downright indespensible. Whether it was through your time, friendship, generosity, or all of the above, my sincerest thanks are with you.
